Luminate

Two products, one design direction

Luminate is the entertainment industry's leading data and insights company, across music, film and television, and the data source behind the Billboard charts for over 30 years. The engagement covered two of its music products at once: the internal portal where that data is ingested and managed, and the subscription platform where its clients consult it to see what sold, was downloaded or was searched for most. Both existed already, and the company wanted them modernised and aligned with a rebrand it had just completed.

The Decisions Behind

I led the design direction of two products for the same client, and built the team that carried it.

The challenge

Two existing products with opposite users had to be modernised at once and aligned with Luminate's new brand: an internal portal where music industry data is ingested and managed, and a subscription platform where clients consult that data. Direct access to end users was limited, so their pain points had to be found through the people who knew the tools best. The brand's music-world energy had to work inside two data-dense dashboard products, and design had to stay aligned with development's constraints while still delivering what the client wanted and what served users best.

What I did

  • Diagnosed what each product needed and shaped both teams: I interviewed and hired three visual designers, and gave the senior one room to lead the subscription platform.
  • Set one visual direction for both products, breaking the brand down into lines, angles and colour and applying them even to the most repeated components.
  • Set how the music world would show up in dense data tools: a header built around musicians' photography in the internal portal, artist and album images in avatars and tables, and modern brand-coloured dashboards in the subscription platform.
  • Led the product design of the internal portal across eight core flows, with designers joining the team along the way.

How I got it accepted

I explained every design by the job it did, including the emotional role of the visual design, to take subjectivity out of the discussion, and I brought the client into the process so they understood where each decision came from. Over time the client trusted my judgement. Both products moved forward under one design direction, and I answered to the client for planning, resources and quality on both teams.

TWO PRODUCTS, ONE DESIGN DIRECTION I set the design direction for both products, and stayed accountable for both

1 · Diagnose

What kind of design each product needed, what the team had to look like, and which shared assets were worth building.

2 · Set the visual direction

Designed one key page per product. Both aligned with each other and with the company’s new brand.

3 · Build the teams

Interviewed and assembled the designers each product needed.

INTERNAL PORTAL · INGESTION AND METADATA MANAGEMENT

Led its product design

I led the UX of the product and designed a large part of its screens, across eight core flows, together with the designers who joined the team. When the team rotated, I took on the visual design myself so the work would not stop.

I DEFINE AND I DESIGN

SUBSCRIPTION PLATFORM · CLIENT-FACING

Set the line, then built the team

I set the initial design line for this product, then built the team that would carry it: a senior designer I hired went on to lead it, and the client added an in-house UX designer. I kept the two products aligned in components and visual direction, and reviewed the work.

I SET THE LINE AND I HOLD IT

One shared component library and one visual line held both products together, even with opposite audiences. One was an internal tool built for density, and the other a subscription platform built to be read at a glance.

The internal portal

Search, results, detail and editing flows for recordings, artists, songs, releases and products, plus provider management. Built for expert users who work in it every day, so the priority was density and speed.

Internal portal: search results for recordings
Internal portal: territory-based values and localized data
Internal portal: results table
Internal portal: detail view
